Being made new

It’s a new year. New month, new year, newness abounds. The holiday decorations have come down, the gifts have been put into use. And resolutions? Sure, for some people, new resolve to do or to learn or to improve this or that situation.

Lots of new happening, you know?

I read something this morning. It’s from the Bible, but it’s not preachy and it’s not limited to any faith practice. In fact, it’s simply good advice.

Be made new in the attitude of your mind.

Isn’t that a nifty little gem? It gave me quite a bit to think about. We go for newness all over the place. We dress ourselves in new clothes. We like new things for our homes. There is simple enjoyment in something new, and that’s fine. But there is also, at times, an attempt to make everything okay by surrounding ourselves with the new. You know the reasoning.

If only I had those new boots, I would be completely put together and life would be good.

If I could just have a new job (hair style, spouse, whatever) I would be on track and splendidness would take over.

Yep. And of course the realization comes that while the new boots might make you strut your stuff for awhile, they won’t actually change your life. No, really. They won’t.

But that little verse? Yeah, now, that’s life changing.

The attitude of your mind can do what new boots never could. The attitude of your mind can absolutely, positively make you new. Not your outfit but your outlook. And that’s what it takes to bring newness into your reality.

So am I saying change your political leanings? Stop believing whatever you embrace and pick an entirely different foundation for your life? Disagree with everything you used to agree with and become contrary to the extreme?

No, of course not.

But…if you find yourself seeking newness, perhaps consider where your mind is dwelling first and perhaps experiment with an attitude of openness, an embracing of possibilities, an acceptance of mindfulness.

Change starts from within and so does embracing the new. If you’re feeling a bit unsettled right now, during the start of a new year, realize you aren’t alone. Many people find themselves yearning for something when the hustle and bustle of the joyful celebrations has ended.

Are you yearning for something new? Begin within, searching your attitude and creating a wealth of new possibilities in the infinitely powerful aspect of your own mind.
