You are not your history

Well, phooey. Now I’ve given away the whole point of this blog post. But you’re here, so read on anyway.

We are taught that history is the foundation on which we are built. As we were, so we are…that kind of thing. While I do agree that history teaches us a whole lot of important lessons about cultures, about issues that never seem to go away, about choices and consequences, I also believe that it doesn’t have absolute control over who we are. What do I mean?

I mean that what happened to you, happened. Yes, it did. And it was great or it was awful and it shaped you in one way or another. And even with all of that, even acknowledging the validity of that reality, you can STILL step beyond it. Not away from it. Not that. Because it happened, right? So you don’t get to erase the board and write up a nice new history. So no, stepping away from your history is not possible. But stepping beyond it, realizing that you do not need to wrap yourself all up in that story forever and ever? Yes, that is possible.

And it’s not only possible, it’s essential for our own growth. What you claim as you is how you manifest. If you are claiming that history over and over, if that’s the story you know and tell, then guess what? Your history is indeed your present. As you were is how you are. That’s not much of a fun possibility, is it? So why not change the pattern?

Because, you know, you can.

Your playing small does not serve the world.   ~Marianne Williamson

It doesn’t. And it doesn’t serve you. So nobody wins when you wrap up in your history and hide. Nobody wins.

Everyone has a spirit that can be refined, a body that can be trained in some manner, a suitable path to follow. You are here to realize your inner divinity and manifest your innate enlightenment.   ~Morihei Ueshiba

Oh, yeah. That’s a good one. We are here to claim, own and relish our incredible, amazing lives. We can make any number of excuses why we don’t. Our history is one of those excuses. I’m not good at. I can’t. I wish I might. My parents. My spouse. My past.

In other words, my history is keeping me from my beautiful present and the promise of my amazing future. Now, really. What would you say to someone who told you that? Would you look at them and suggest that they stop hanging on to their history and start reaching for their splendid potential? Would you?

Walk over to a mirror now and tell yourself that.

Never let life impede on your ability to manifest your dreams. Dig deeper into your dreams and deeper into yourself and believe that anything is possible, and make it happen.   ~Corin Nemec

Yes. Yes, yes, yes. Exactly that. Believe absolutely in yourself and in the fact that you can. Sure, you can. You, right there, reading this right now, can. And if anything in your past has told you that you couldn’t or that you wouldn’t or that you shouldn’t, kiss your fingers and wave goodbye. Because you can and you will and you should.

Feeling that our history is holding us back is a fear. But more than that, it is an excuse. It is a reason to limit ourselves and until you take away that reason you can’t move on and up and away. What was then becomes familiar and safe. What we might be, our potential, is all kinds of scary.

What if we are so amazing, we can’t even believe our incredibleness?

Now that’s a problem we should all have. It is a bit overwhelming to sidle away from what limits us and tiptoe closer to what empowers us.

Because I am enormously fond of Marianne Williamson and her wisdom, I’ll give you another thought from her.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you NOT to be?

Who are you NOT to be? You have the light and the power. Release the hold of the past, the limits history has placed on you. Let it go. What happened was valid and shaped you and caused thoughts and emotions and now here you are, able to thank history for the lesson and move up, up and away. Soar. Claim your power.

Celebrate your light. The light of the present, the sparkle of the future.

Your history is a part of you, but it does not define you. Claim now what you want, who you are. Claim it and manifest with the confidence that you are indeed powerful beyond measure.
